Guide to Nokia software updates and security patches

Nokia mobile like any other Android smartphone also releases it’s software updates and security patches. Google’s Security Patches are released monthly and depend on the hardware in your phone. As these releases have specific hardware dependencies, you will need to ensure your phone is fully supported. Once the quality has been assured, the Security Patch will be delivered to your phone. Due to this, the Security Patches are dependent upon your device model, operator and also your location. As the Security Patches are designed to enhance security, it is advised to install them as soon as convenient.

Factors to ensure before your Nokia is ready for update

Though HMD Global is delivering the latest Security Patches to your Android smartphone as quickly as possible. But there are several factors which may affect the date you actually receive an update. These factors include device model, region, location, operator approvals, and Google’s Security Patch Monthly Release announcement. Security Patches are also sometimes included with Maintenance Releases.

Also note that the release dates refer to the live releases for the first approved markets. In general, the release may take several days to reach all consumers within an approved market. Generally all Maintenance and Security Patch releases should be accepted as soon as possible to help ensure a smooth Android experience.

To install updates simply navigate to Settings > System > System update > Check for update to check if updates are available.

OTA updates for Nokia mobile

OTA or over-the-air update is the wireless delivery of new software or data to mobile devices. Wireless carriers and original equipment manufacturers ( OEM ) typically use over-the-air (OTA) updates to deploy firmware and configure phones for use on their networks. The initialization of a newly purchased phone, for example, requires an over-the-air update.

OEMs can deliver OTA updates to users in a few ways. From the end user’s perspective, the OTA update can either be automatic or manual.

• With an automatic OTA update, the back-end system of a mobile operator can push a firmware update to the end user’s device. OEMs can use products that automate OTA updates. Devices that are in remote locations, such as IoT sensors, or devices that don’t have frequent human contact, such as an autonomous vehicle, are good contenders for automatic OTA updates.
• Manual OTA updates notify a user about an available update, and the user can accept or refuse to download the update on their device. Mobile carriers can also send an SMS message to all users who have a particular device, prompting them to dial a number to receive a software update when it is most convenient.
• IoT devices can receive OTA updates in a variety of ways. With edge-to-cloud OTA updates, a microcontroller receives firmware images from a remote server to update the underlying hardware or application. Gateway-to-cloud OTA updates use an internet-connected gateway that receives updates from a remote server to update the software app itself, the software app’s host environment or the gateway’s firmware.

The time it takes for the OTA update to complete depends on the size of the update. It is best to run the update when you have good signal strength.

For that run the update and the Nokia phone will restart and the screen will only display a window for some time

If there is no change on the screen for several minutes then Press the volume-up and power keys together and hold for 10 seconds – this will force the phone to restart

When the Nokia phone has rebooted, head to Settings > About phone > Software Update and try to install the update again
